Research Statement

I am a botanist with interests in plant geography, historical biogeography, floristics, phylogenetics, evolution, conservation, cartography, data visualization, spatial databases and ecological niche modeling.  While most of my published research has been in molecular systematics and phylogeography, I have shifted my focus to incorporate cutting edge tools in mapping and modeling.  My experience as a field biologist exploring the flora of the Pacific Northwest is foundational to all of my interests, and my perspective as an end-user of taxonomy, databases and maps informs all my work.

Teaching

I am not currently teaching.  As adjunct faculty in the Dept. of Biological Sciences, I developed and co-taught a course in Biogeography (Bio 4840/6840) and offered senior/grad capstone seminars (Bio 4920/8000) for biology majors on the topics of Island Biogeography and the Ecology and Evolution of Zoonotic Diseases.
