Background

Hello, my name is Showmik Ahsan. I am currently a PhD student here at Wright State University. I started my academic journey in Fall 2016. I finished my Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering in Fall 2020. I completed a Masters in Mechanical Engineering in Spring 2023. My thesis topic was: "Effect of Size and Shape Parameters on Microstructure of Additively Manufactured Inconel 718". I started the PhD in Summer 2023. I am aiming to graduate and finish the PhD in 2026. My topic for my dissertation is "Additive Manufacturing of Inconel 718 and 316L Preforms for Forging Operations".

Graduate Research Assistant at AFRL through UES Inc,                    February 2021 – June 2021

  • Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of carbon nanotubes
  • Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy

Graduate Research Assistant at SOCHE,                                              August 2021 – July 2022

  • Worked with Clark State College, STEM School, and Wright State University to develop curriculum for manufacturing ecosystem

Graduate Research Assistant at WSU,                                                   August 2022 – present

  • Working in Additive Manufacturing (AM) Lab that houses various 3D printers such as Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) for metals and nylon, vat polymerization, material extrusion for polymers, inkjet printers for electronics, etc.
  • Characterize (SEM/EBSD, XRD, microhardness, mechanical testing, etc.) nickel-based superalloy and stainless steel, both
    • As processed using LPBF AM method, and
    • After forging

  • b) Process Optimization and Lean Manufacturing Improvements.
  • c) Facility and Capital Improvement Projects.
  • d) Support to Engineering and Quality Management.

ASME leadership

For the ASME (American Society of Engineering) club, I have served as the president from January 2023 to current. As a club, we participated in a Red Bull Flug Tag competition, making a hand made pane without any machinery or engine. We have had the opportunity of also volunteering for the community for several different places. Have also integrated having industry tours for the club for the students to make connections.
