Harminder Grewal M.D., M.B.B.S., D.G.O., FAAFP
Dr. Harminder Grewal is an Associate Professor of Family Medicine and currently serves as the Chair of the Department of Family Medicine at Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine since February 2023. In addition, she serves as the Whole Health Clinical Lead at Dayton VA Medical Center.
Dr. Grewal obtained her MBBS and Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynecology from University of Delhi, India and then completed her residency in Family Medicine at the Ohio State University. She was conferred the degree of Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) by the New York Board of Regents.
She has clinical experience and training in Family Medicine, Integrative Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology and Pediatrics in USA, India, and UK. She is Board Certified in Family Medicine (ABFM) and Integrative Medicine (ABIHM and ABOIM). She is also certified by the Institute of Functional Medicine. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. She has had training in academic leadership, administration, and Lean Management. She has a green belt in Lean Management.
She was nominated by SUNY Upstate Medical University and successfully completed one year long Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine program and its Executive Leadership in Health Care track (ELH-ELAM) on April 27th, 2023.
Prior to this position, she was the Women’s Health Medical Director and Whole Health Clinical Director at Syracuse VA Medical Center. She was a Clinical Associate Professor of Family Medicine at SUNY Upstate Medical University and served as the Vice Chair for Medical Student Education for the Department of Family Medicine since 2017. She was instrumental in the inception, development and ACGME accreditation of SUNY Upstate Medical University Family Medicine Residency that started in July 2019. She was the Site Director for the Family Medicine Residency Program at Syracuse VA Medical Center. In addition, she was the Program Director for the VA Chief residency in Quality and Safety (CRQS) for Family Medicine at Syracuse VA Medical Center. She was a teaching faculty for medical students at SUNY Upstate and public health students at Syracuse University for many years and supported their education in Integrative Medicine, Women’s Health, LGBTQ Issues, biopsychosocial determinants of health and Whole Health.
She was the Principal Investigator for the development of Rural Residency Track Program expansion of the SUNY Upstate Family Medicine program at Auburn Community Hospital in Auburn NY and received HRSA funding for development of this residency from 2020-2023. This rural track program successfully matriculated its first residents in July 2023.
Dr. Grewal has a passion for learning and developing a model of care that focuses on the whole person and not just individual organ systems. She has extensive experience in the fields of Integrative Medicine and functional medicine that have significant emphasis on food as medicine and has received training at Cornell University in plant-based nutrition. Dr. Grewal’s research focuses on the Whole Health System of Care, Women’s Health, and Rural Graduate Medical Education. She has been a Principal Investigator and Co-Principal Investigator on numerous awards, including HRSA, Whole Health Partnership, Subspecialty Innovation Grant, and VA Central Office Educational Grant. Her publications have appeared in journals such as Global Advances in Health and Medicine, Military Medicine, Family Medicine, and Society of Teachers of Family Medicine publications.
