Hugh received his BSc degree in Aerospace engineering. He has experience working in multiple manufacturing industries as an engineer. His master's degree in engineering and management of manufacturing systems was obtained from Cranfield University. Hugh finished his PhD program at the University of Iowa in 2019 and his thesis was on trust in automation.  
Hugh taught a variety of industrial and mechanical engineering courses. 

His main research areas are trust in automation, human factors in radiology, and human factors in infection prevention. Hugh supervises a number of PhD and MSc students, and primarily works in healthcare, aviation, and road safety.
