Joe Macisco, PhD, MPH, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Population and Public Health Sciences at Wright State University’s Boonshoft School of Medicine. Dr. Macisco is a health behavior public health scientist with expertise in theory-driven, mixed-methods research. Grounded in both public health and social psychology, his work bridges behavioral science and applied intervention design.
Research
Dr. Macisco's primary research goal focuses on developing innovative, game-based strategies to promote health and health equity. His research examines how structurally disadvantaged or under-resourced populations engage with health messaging and behavior change interventions. In a game-based context, this means understanding how health messages may be best delivered (e.g., what games or game mechanisms effectively communicate health messages) and received (e.g., how positively the content of the messages are perceived by audience members). Much of his published work focuses on health communication and tobacco use.
